In medicine, a surgeon is a person who performs surgery, a broad category of invasive medical treatment that involves the cutting of a body, for a specific reason, such as to remove a diseased organ or to repair a tear or breakage. Surgeons may be medical doctors, dentists, podiatrists or veterinarians.
A general surgeon has expertise in the diagnosis and care of patients with diseases and disorders affecting the abdomen, digestive tract, endocrine system, breast, skin, and blood vessels. A general surgeon is also trained in the care of pediatric and cancer patients and in the treatment of patients who are injured or critically ill. Common problems treated by general surgeons include hernias, breast tumors, gallstones, appendicitis, pancreatitis, bowel obstructions, colon inflammation, and colon cancer. General surgeons increasingly provide care through the use of minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques. The residency for general surgery is five years. Up to two years of additional training is required to practice in one of the subspecialty areas.
Surgeons can also receive training in subspecialties such as plastic surgery, neurosurgery, pediatric surgery and robotic surgery. Neurosurgery is the discipline focused on treating the central nervous system, peripheral nervous systems and spinal column diseases amenable to surgical intervention. It generally has the longest training period of all the medical specialties, requiring the completion the eight years of pre-medical and medical education, a one-year long surgical internship and five to seven years of neurosurgery residency.
Plastic surgery is a medical specialty concerned with the correction or restoration of form and function. While famous for aesthetic surgery, plastic surgery also includes the fields of body modification and reconstructive surgery. A modern innovation is robotic surgery. Three major advances aided by surgical robots have been remote surgery, minimally invasive surgery and unmanned surgery. Some major advantages of robotic surgery are precision, miniaturization, smaller incisions, decreased blood loss, less pain, and quicker healing time.
